Towel Care: Tips for Long-Lasting, Soft Towels
Towels are among the most frequently used items in any home. Indispensable for washing, for drying your hands or simply for enjoying the moment after a bath, they can last a long time and stay comfortable if you look after them properly. All too often, though, towels stiffen over time or lose their colour. Knowing the right care methods is essential if you want to extend their life and keep them soft every time you use them. Here are the best care tips for your towels:
The Right Washing Frequency and Temperature
Keep in mind that washing your towels too often wears down the fabric over the long run. Instead, air each towel after use and let it dry thoroughly. As for frequency, washing once or twice a week is usually enough. If the towel is in daily use, washing it every three or four uses is recommended.
Temperature matters a great deal when washing towels. Water that is too hot can stiffen the pile and cause colours to fade. Between 30 and 40°C is the ideal washing temperature for towels. Higher temperatures can damage the fibres and make towels lose their softness.
Choosing the Right Detergent and Softener

Using detergents formulated specifically for towels can help them last longer. Using too much detergent, on the other hand, can break down the fibres of the fabric. Be careful with fabric softener as well: using too much reduces a towel's absorbency. Keeping softener to a minimum preserves your towels' ability to soak up water.
Dry Your Towels at the Right Temperature
Temperature is just as important when drying. Where possible, dry towels on a low heat setting or in the open air. If you use a tumble dryer, take care to choose a low heat setting. If you dry them outdoors, it is better to keep towels out of direct sunlight and let them dry in the shade, because strong sun can fade the colours.
Correct Storage
Storing towels properly protects their texture and keeps them fresh and soft for longer. Once you are sure they are completely dry after washing, store your towels somewhere well ventilated. Closed cupboards can create damp conditions, which makes towels smell and deteriorate faster.
